Finding Joy in the Hard Seasons

single lit candle against a black backdrop

Remembering my mom, I stood in my house this past Thanksgiving, making sourdough biscuits and deviled eggs. While my son and I prepared the dressing, I was transported back to my childhood, watching my dad trim the gizzards and chop the vegetables for his dressing. And, as I made the roux for the gravy, I recalled my brother losing his mind as he burned two batches in a row before he got it right. I miss my family. It will be Christmas soon.

Christmas often arrives with sparkling lights and merry tunes, but for many, it only seems to spotlight everything broken—the empty seat at the table, the dreams left unfulfilled, the pain we try to bury beneath the surface. Finding joy in the hard seasons can feel impossible. It's hard to celebrate when life feels more like a storm than a silent night. But here's the truth: God doesn't need you to tidy up your life before He steps in; He meets you in the mess.

Christmas wasn't perfect the first time, either. The manger wasn't sanitized or serene—it was messy. Jesus wasn't born into ease or comfort. He entered a world tangled in chaos and sin. And Jesus didn't just visit; He stayed. Emmanuel isn't just a name; it's the heartbeat of heaven breaking into our chaos. The Creator of galaxies didn't just glance at our pain; He stepped into it. He stood in our storms, holding us through every shattered piece of our lives.

This promise—God with us—declares no brokenness is too deep, no mess too tangled, for His presence to transform. Emmanuel whispers hope into our darkest nights and reminds us of this unshakable truth: we are never alone. The promise of Emmanuel is not about life being easy but about never facing it alone. Emmanuel isn't just a name; it's God's relentless love, assuring us that He is always here.

Finding Emmanuel in a Hard Season

When life feels heavy, joy can seem out of reach. But joy and pain aren't opposites; they often coexist. Jesus was a man of sorrows, yet He radiated joy because His life was rooted in the Father's presence. Joy doesn't require a perfect life—it springs from the perfect Savior who promises to be with us in every moment. Joy doesn't depend on changing circumstances but on an unchanging God.

Practical Steps to Experience His Presence

  • Acknowledge the Chaos. God isn't asking you to hide your pain. Healing starts with honesty. Bring your heartache, doubts, and shattered dreams to Him. Imagine yourself placing them at His feet—not as something to be ashamed of, but as something He longs to redeem. When we step outside our pain to love others, we discover God's hands working through ours.

  • Seek the Sacred in the Ordinary. Emmanuel means God is with you—even in the most minor details. The warmth of sunlight on your face. The laughter of a child. The quiet stillness of prayer. These are not coincidences; they are sacred reminders He is near. Joy reveals itself in the ordinary when we open our eyes to God's presence.

  • Pour Out Love. Sometimes, sharing love with others is the quickest way to experience God's presence. Send a note of encouragement. Drop off groceries for someone in need. God fills you with a deeper sense of His love and purpose as you pour love out.

  • Anchor Yourself in His Promises. Emotions can be a storm, but God's Word is an anchor. When life feels overwhelming, return to the promises of Scripture. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18, ESV) Verses like this are reminders Jesus is close to the brokenhearted. Write His promises where you can see them and let them shape your perspective. When we step outside our pain to love others, we discover God's hands working through ours.

The Gift of Emmanuel

When the angel announced Jesus' birth, he didn't promise life would suddenly be easy. Instead, he proclaimed "good news of great joy" because Emmanuel had come. God didn't stay distant. He stepped into history—and your story. Right now, in the middle of whatever you're facing, He is with you. Emmanuel means you are not forgotten. Jesus' love reaches into every broken piece of your life and whispers, "I am here."

This Christmas, let's rest in the miracle of Emmanuel. Joy isn't something we muster up; it's Someone we encounter. And because God is with us, we can face whatever comes with the unshakable hope He is holding us every step of the way.
